MEET THE SISTERS
SISTER PAULA MARIA
My name is Sister Paula Maria and to begin my vocation story, I would have to say that it is all about God’s grace and merciful love. I was born in Nicaragua, a very Catholic country by tradition, so I was raised a Catholic. When I was just a year old and shortly after my younger sister was born my parents divorced. Since my mom had to work my aunt raised us. After several years my mom remarried and decided to move to the United States, where things didn't work out for mom resulting in a new separation...read more
SISTER MARY AUGUSTINE
At the age of 19, I left my home and telephone operator job in Maryland and went to New York to seek my vocation. While living with my aunt I took on a few jobs in a store and factory, not to be a burden to her. It seemed I wasn’t getting anywhere with my urge for Convent life. My aunt said to me that maybe it was not meant to be, but a holy nun once said, “You have a vocation, keep trying.” I decided to go back to my home...read more
SISTER M. CARMELITA
I’m a person who would rather “be the story” then put my story on paper. However, when I was asked to write my vocation story, I jumped to the opportunity because I am anxious to share the happiness that I have found, serving our Lord, in Carmel with others. I am the seventh of thirteen children born to my parents, Leonardo and Christita Torreno. I have eleven brothers; three have died. I also have a sister–my close playmate in our family home...read more
SISTER ANNE MARIE, CARMEL DCJ
My religious vocation didn’t begin with me. The first hint that God had something special in mind for my family was back in the 1970s. From a respectable Protestant family, my grandmother decided to pursue a degree at a Catholic college. Her studies ended in her conversion, which in turn resulted in the conversion of my grandpa, my mother who was 16 at the time and my aunt. Were it not for that, I doubt I would ever have found the Church on my own, let alone my vocation...read more
SISTER M. THERESA MARGARET
One summer afternoon as I was feeling rather happy I went downtown to take the entrance test for the seventh grade when all of a sudden I noticed a convent across the street. Within moments I was ringing the front doorbell of the good sisters. My heart was beating very fast and I was nervous as I decided to ask for information. To my great disappointment, no one was home. Thus, my return trip was not too exciting...read more
SISTER SISTER MARIA URSULA INFANTE
I come from a very devote Catholic family. My mother has a great devotion to our Blessed Mother which she also instilled into her children along with the devotion to the Sacred Heart. She told us that she entrusted her children to God the Father and to simplicity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. One of my favorite pastime as a child of five was to play ‘nun’....read more
